Wellness is the conscious
development of the whole self. It is the concept of practicing all the things
that keeps a person well. It involves maintaining good nutrition, exercise,
stress-control, and good personal and familial social relationships.
According to the National Wellness Institute there are eight dimensions, of
wellness. They include:
-
Physical:
A physically well person selects a varied and nutritionally balanced diet.
This person seeks to get an adequate amount of sleep, engages in moderate to
vigorous exercise 3-5 times a week, gets routine medical check-ups
appropriate to his or her age and risk factors, and takes safety
precautions.
-
Emotional:
An emotionally well person is able to express and manage the entire range of
feelings, including anger, fear, happiness and sadness.
-
Social:
A socially well person has a network of friends and family with
relationships that are based on interdependence (rather than codependence),
mutual trust and respect, equity of power and cultural competence.
-
Intellectual: An
intellectually well person values education and engages in lifelong
learning, and pursues activities that increase knowledge, develop moral
reasoning, foster critical thinking and expand world views.
-
Spiritual:
The spiritually well person seeks meaning and purpose in human existence,
and has an appreciation of life.
-
Sexual:
A sexually well person is comfortable in expressing feelings that relate to
a person's sexual orientation, perspective and behavior.
-
Occupational: An
occupationally well person seeks to fulfill a social and professional
defined role that is both stimulating and inherently rewarding.
-
Environmental: An
environmentally well person strives to minimize wasteful consumption or
unnecessary destruction of animals, plants, elements or energy.
