Disability Access Statements

Text Only Version

Conferences/ Events:

All programs/events sponsored by the campus must be accessible. When planning conferences, events, and activities, designate someone to be responsible for handling requests for accommodations. In registration brochures, invitations, or fliers, use the following access statement:

"To request accommodations for a disability, please contact [name, department, address, phone number] at least 2 weeks before the [event/workshop]."

Publications, such as course syllabi, college bulletins, program brochures, class schedules, newsletters, and instructional publications must be provided in alternative formats (Braille, large print, or computer disk) upon request; the Office for Disability Services, (740-366-9441), can provide assistance with document conversion. In these publications please print the following statement:

"This publication/material is available in alternative formats upon request. Please contact (name, department, address, phone number).”

Syllabus:

The accommodation process should be one of collaboration between student and instructor with the support of the Office for Disability Services. By placing a statement on your syllabus and making an announcement in class, you encourage students with disabilities to identify their needs early. Typically students will identify their needs either before the class starts or during the first two weeks. Some students delay disclosure for a variety of reasons. They may not anticipate the need for accommodation because they are unfamiliar with the discipline’s demands, they may be embarrassed, or they may find even the most approachable instructor intimidating.

Elements for Syllabus Statement:

  • An invitation to students who have disabilities to meet, in a confidential environment, review course requirements and discuss their need for accommodations.

  • Faculty members can require students to make accommodation requests in a timely manner. It is, however, necessary to remain flexible.
