What Can I Expect in Counseling?
Counseling aims to help you understand yourself better,
become more effective in reaching your goals and, in the process, become more
successful. The counselor in Counseling Services is interested in your
personal, academic, and intellectual growth. Some students meet with their
counselor on a weekly basis, some on a bi-weekly basis, and others at varying
intervals. In these 50-minute sessions, you and your counselor talk about what
is causing you distress currently and explore ways to understand and alleviate
these concerns.
Our services are provided on a voluntary basis (students choose to come to
counseling), and you need not be referred by anyone to participate in the
counseling process.
Our counselor is a professional and an independently licensed counselor.
Confidentiality
Information disclosed in clinical sessions is confidential
and may not be released to anyone outside of Counseling Services without your
written permission. The counselor adheres to professional, legal, and ethical
guidelines established by professional organizations and state law. Legal and
ethical exceptions to confidentiality include:
(1) when there is a clear and present danger of harm to you or others
(2) when there is knowledge or suspicion of abuse or neglect of children or
elderly persons
(3) when a court subpoenas clinical records
(4) when an individual cites his/her treatment/clinical record in a legal
proceeding
(5) as otherwise required by law
Please inform your therapist if you are under 18 years of age, as additional
limits on confidentiality may apply.
