Jill Coleman Office: 2048 Founders Hall Phone: (740)366-9263 I received my M.A. and Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I taught at Middlebury College in Vermont before coming to Ohio State University Newark in the Fall of 2007.
Teaching
Background I have been interested in psychology since I took my first course on the subject in high school. I began my undergraduate career at Loyola University Chicago as a psychology major and had the opportunity to work with Dr. Linda Heath on my honors thesis during my senior year. That project, on perceptions of rape in marriage as they relate to rape myths, allowed me to combine my interests in social psychology with my interest in Women's Studies. Immediately after completing my degree I began my graduate studies at the University of Illinois. During my six years there I was able to work with several faculty members, primarily Cynthia Pickett and Ying-yi Hong. My dissertation research focused on theories of gender stereotypes and self-stereotyping. Specifically, I was interested in whether people who believe that gender differences are mainly the result of biological factors use more stereotypes to describe themselves than do people who believe that gender differences are the result of social factors. In addition to my work on social identity and self-stereotyping, I have been able to work on projects relating to relationship regrets, parental leave policies, and perceptions of working and stay-at-home parents. I began teaching during my first semester at the University of Illinois and continued to do so throughout my graduate school career. I taught Social Psychology for three years, then moved on to teach Introductory Psychology and Research Methods in Social Psychology. Some of my best experiences and best friendships from my years at Illinois came from my time teaching these courses and getting to know other instructors in the department. After finishing my doctorate, I
accepted a job as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Middlebury College
in Vermont. I spent two busy but fun years there teaching
alongside my wonderful colleagues in the Psychology Department. At
the end of my contract I was happy to secure a job back in the Midwest
at Ohio State - Newark, and I look forward to all of the new challenges
this job will bring!
