How do I take advantage of wireless?

The wireless technologies available to students, faculty, and staff of The Ohio State University at Newark and the Central Ohio Technical College were designed to allow a wireless connection to the campus network using either  a Laptop or a Personal Computer.

There are a few specifications that the laptop or PC must include. The most important is a wireless card. However, not all wireless cards are the same. A basic chart of wireless differences is available here. Our campus uses 802.11b wireless.

LaptopWhen you are purchasing a laptop or PC, or upgrading your current laptop or PC for wireless connectivity, there are a few things to consider.  The link below outlines some compatible laptops for your consideration.  Some people may want to use the wireless capabilities in the dorms with a desktop  personal computer. However, remember that wireless capability may be more expensive than connecting to a landline and the wireless network connection may be noticeably slower.

When choosing the laptop that's right for you, keep in mind that not only does Dell provide discounts to students at this campus, but Information Technology Services guarantees that Dell wireless equipment is compatible with the wireless technology on this campus.  Does this mean that no other laptop will work? Absolutely not. ITS simply does not guarantee that other wireless equipment on laptops or PC's will connect to the Newark Campus wireless network.
