COTC | 20 Top Important Things You Need To Know At COTC

  1. Call or see your advisor whenever you have a question.  He or she is a great source of information and can refer you to on and off campus resources.
  2. Rules! Rules! Rules!  Colleges (and COTC is no different) are great places for rules, regulations and policies to grow and multiply.  Talk to your advisor if you have any questions.
  3. Whenever you want to make a schedule change, see your academic advisor and your financial aid advisor.  Why?  Well, your fees may change when you add or drop a class.  Whatever you do, don't just stop going to class.  Talk to your advisor first.
  4. Books:  purchase before the first day of class - do not write in them if you want a full refund when you return them - keep your receipts for returns - purchase used books to save money - books for off-campus classes may be purchased at the off-campus locations
  5. Room locator sheets (Campus Connect) are posted on bulletin boards to help you find your classes.  You can also pick them up at the welcome table in Founders and Hopewell Halls and the COTC Student Records and Academic Advising offices.
  6. Please let us know if you have a physical or learning disability; tell your advisor and your instructor.  You must notify the Learning Assistance Center if you desire assistance.
  7. Use your syllabus!  It provides useful information about your instructor and your class, including which textbook to buy, a course description and course goals.
  8. Class attendance is important; it goes hand-in-hand with success.
  9. Be aware that college courses move at a fast pace.  Each quarter only lasts ten weeks, in which you may cover one or more books!  Some classes consist of both a lecture and lab, while other courses may only last for 5 weeks!
  10. Notes! Notes! Notes!  Taking 1413 College Success Skills can help you to develop a note taking system.  You can also contact the Study Skills Specialist at 366-9246 for a special note-taking workshop offered during the first quarter.
  11. Make study time a priority.  A good formula to remember is to have 2 hours of study time for every 1-hour of classroom attendance.  A quiet place to study is ideal.
  12. Get to know your instructors.  You should turn to them first when you need help with academic problems.  They have office hours set aside specifically for you, so don't be afraid to ask!
  13. There are also a number of different places you can turn to for additional help: the Learning Assistance Center, the Math Lab, Career Services and of course, Academic Advising.
  14. If you have car problems, need parking permit or student I.D., then stop by the Safety and Security office in Hopewell 122.  They can also offer you an escort walking to classes or your car.
  15. The weather in Ohio can be tricky!  There are Severe Weather lines you can call: Newark 366-9216; Columbus 292-4094 ext. 216; elsewhere in Ohio 1-800-9NEWARK (963-9275) ext. 216.  Closings for the Newark campus are also announced on local T.V. and radio.  If you can't make it to class due to inclement weather, it is your responsibility to let your instructor know and make up any missed work.  For off-campus sites, you will not meet if the KCCC or Coshocton Center are closed.  If you cannot get to class, please use the following numbers: Knox County Career Center 392-2526 and Coshocton Center 622-1408.
  16. Did you know that the school could disclose directory and honor roll information about you?  Check out the Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) for more information.
  17. Become familiar with the COTC Bulletin and New Student Handbook.  They're full of useful information!
  18.  A lot of school information is available on the COTC website: www.cotc.edu
  19. Always double-check your schedule for accuracy.
  20. When you get the Important Dates handout, keep it in a safe place!  It's important to know when fees are due, withdraw dates and vacation days!
