ADVISOR

PROGRAM ADVISOR
(You will be assigned an advisor based on your program)

After submitting an Application for Admission, an academic advisor will be assigned to each student. It is each student's responsibility to make an appointment to meet with the assigned advisor. Students will be classified as degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking. These two groups will be guided by differing policies regarding advising and registration procedures.

Non-degree seeking students need to make an appointment to meet with the assigned advisor or take placement tests (unless enrolling in a course that requires the placement exam) to register for classes at COTC, but they must adhere to all course prerequisites. There is no restriction on the number of hours a non-degree seeker may obtain from COTC.

Students who decide to switch to a degree option should notify the Academic Advising Office and have their transcript(s) evaluated.  Non-degree students are not restricted from meeting with an advisor should they so choose. Degree-seeking students are afforded the best possible advising available at the college.

1. A new, first-time student is assigned to an academic advisor. Academic advisors work closely with new students to assist in their transition to COTC. The advisors are available to assist students with any aspect of their college experience and are available to help students achieve their educational and career goals. Services provided to students include assisting new students with paperwork and orientation to the demands of college life. Staff are also available to help the student develop individual learning plans, academic goals and plans for improving study skills, time management, and stress management. Advisors will also counsel the student using the approved Plan of Study for the student's technology of choice.

2. Undecided students will stay with the Academic Advising Office until choosing a major.  Non-health students will be assigned to a faculty advisor in that technology upon completing all pre-college coursework based on COMPASS placement; health majors will remain with the advising office until acceptance into the health program.  Students who are undecided are encouraged to visit the Career Services Office for counseling and assistance in making a career choice.

3. Students who have identified a major program of study will be assigned to a faculty advisor in the appropriate technology.  Upon completion of all pre-college coursework and satisfying academic process.  Faculty advisors are available during the spring quarter to advise continuing students for autumn quarter. As in "1" above, students who require advising during the summer will be served by the Academic Advising Office.

4. Students who are admitted to a Selective Admissions Program will be assigned to a faculty advisor immediately upon admission to the program. .

5. Post-secondary and Concurrent Enrollment students will be advised by the academic advisor.

Questions arising in the absence of a student's academic advisor should be directed to the Manager of Academic Advisement. If a student is uncertain of who his/her academic advisor is, the student may contact the Gateway at 740.366.9422.

The Gateway staff also provides advising at the off-campus sites in Mount Vernon, Pataskala and Coshocton. To schedule an appointment to meet an academic advisor at the Knox Campus in Mount Vernon call 740.392.2526; in Coshocton call 740.622.1408; and in Pataskala call 740.964.7090.
