COTC | Academic Advising FAQ's
What does the Office of Academic Advising do?
Our office works with you to plan a “course of action” for your
academic career. Your advisor can help you with the admissions process,
academic questions, career decisions and course scheduling. Every
student has an advisor. To learn who your advisor is, contact the
advising office at 740-366-9422 locally, 614-292-4094 ext 422 from
Columbus and 1-800-9-NEWARK from anywhere else in Ohio. We are located
in the Hopewell Mall.

Once I am accepted into COTC, am I automatically admitted into my
program? No, certain programs at COTC are selective, which means that
they have additional admission requirements. All Health programs are
selective along with Basic Police Academy and Paramedic programs.
How do I get information on health programs?
All of our health programs require attendance at an Information
Meeting.
This is where you will receive information about the programs, the
required prerequisites and all paperwork necessary to apply. To schedule
an information meeting you may contact the COTC Academic Advising Office
at 740-366-9422.
How long is your health program waiting list
All of our health programs are competitive in that all
prerequisites must be totally completed including the required testing.
You must submit an application to the desired program by the application
deadline to be considered for admission to the program. After the
deadline date for each selection period, a committee will meet to select
the candidates for the program. One of the prerequisites to the
Nursing, Surgical Technology, Sonography and Radiographic Programs is to
attend an Information Meeting where you will be informed of the details
specific to that program.

How do I get information on non-health programs?
General information is available on COTC Fact Sheets. Download
a Fact Sheet at
http://www.newarkcampus.org/cotc/tech_programs.asp. If you have
never attended another college before, you need to begin in the COTC
Admissions Department. Contact Admissions at 740-366-9222. If you have
attended another college, contact the Advising Office at 740-366-9422 to
make an appointment with an advisor.
How do I learn what will
transfer from another college into COTC?
An official evaluation of your transcript will be made once we receive
your application to COTC and your official transcripts from your other
college(s). If you need a general idea of transfer credits, you must
make an appointment with an advisor.
How do I know if I need to take the placement assessment?
If you have not attended another college or taken ACT’s or SAT’s
with appropriate scores, you will need to take a Placement Test. If you
have at least 30 credit hours from another college, and have completed a
math and writing course with a “C” grade or better your Placement Test
may be waived.
When do I make an appointment for a Health Selection Test?
Once you have either completed or are in a quarter where you will
complete all your prerequisites, you should call the COTC Academic
Advising Office to Schedule the test, 740-366-9422.

program?

As you complete each one, check it off on the sheet. To verify all of
your program requirements are met, see your Academic Advisor.
Are my transcripts in yet?
After college transcripts are received and evaluated, a letter is
sent out as to what transferred.
Why do I need my high school transcripts if I have attended
another college? Have my Bachelor’s Degree?

provide us with your high school transcripts. For more information, see
Admissions online at

May I call my Advisor?
You may, with the understanding that if the advisor is with another
student you will be asked to either leave a message or if the person
answering the phone can help you. A lot of times the office staff can
answer your questions and save you and the Advisor time.
How do I make a one-on-one appointment with an advisor?
If your program of interest is a health field, you will first be
asked to attend an Information Meeting. Because it is necessary to limit
time with one-on-one appointments, information concerning a health
program is directed to a Meeting.
One-on-one appointments are used to discuss course work and transfer
credits.
You may call the COTC Academic Advising Office to make an appointment.
How do I reschedule an appointment or test?
You can reschedule an appointment or test by contacting the Advising
Office at 740-366-9422.
I’d like to meet with an advisor (I’m new and want to see someone
now). What do I do?
Scheduled appointments with an Academic Advisor are necessary. If
you are interested in one of our health fields, you will need to make an
appointment to attend an Information Meeting.

What do I do if I’m struggling in my classes?
There are a number of things to try, the first of which is talking
to your instructor. We also have a number of resources available to you
on campus. The Math Lab, located on the ground floor of Founders Hall,
provides tutors, books and videos to assist you in any level math
class. The Learning Assistance Center, or LAC, can provide assistance
to those with learning differences and also provides tutors for any
other subject matter. Just remember, although these services can be
extremely helpful, they cannot help you if you wait too long. Ask for
help early, as often as you need it. COTC also offers two alternatives
for students who just want to wipe the slate clean of any bad grades:
Fresh Start and the Forgiveness Rule. Please ask your advisor about
these options - they might be just what you need!
How do I learn about Financial Aid?
All Financial Aid concerns need to be addressed to your Financial
Aid Advisor. For more information, visit Financial Aid online at
http://www.newarkcampus.org/cotc/aid.asp.
Why do I have to request previous college transcripts when
entering a health program if I didn’t have to when I completed other
programs at COTC or if the classes do not pertain to my major (i.e.
Music class)?
All health programs are competitive and require as part of the
admissions requirements ALL educational transcripts.

student is current on their Plan of Study year and meets all course
prerequisites. For health technologies, advisors track your program
requirements as well.
Why do I have an “S-hold” on my account?
To assure your advisor has approved your registration card. For
meanings of other holds, contact the Records Office at 740-366-9208.

Will my Bachelor Degree give my an edge toward the selection of a
health field?
No, we only use your previous coursework for potential transfer
credits, waiving placement tests and calculating GPA for health
selection.
What do I do if I plan on transferring to another school?
It is important to remember that it is up to the other school, not COTC,
in deciding which credits will transfer over. COTC does have agreements
with several 4-year institutions to accept all of our coursework into
their programs of study (called a 2+2 agreement). You can check with
your advisor to find out which institutions we have this agreement
with. For schools we do not have this agreement with, it is best to
contact them before you plan to transfer to find out what they will
accept. For state schools within Ohio, this information can be found
online. Simply visit
www.transfer.org and fill in the school you are attending and the
one you wish to transfer to. By plugging in course numbers, you can
determine if and how the credit will be transferred.
