ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS

COTC recognizes that some courses completed in high school or vocational school may be equivalent to some entry-level coursework at COTC.  In order to avoid repetition of such courses and to encourage advanced study in the respective disciplines, COTC has entered into "Articulation Agreements" with some high schools, vocational schools, and school districts.  This allows the awarding of credit for certain coursework completed at the high school where articulation agreements are in place.  Such credit waives the student's college course requirement.  In some cases, a more advanced class must be completed prior to transcripting the advanced placement credit.

Please contact the Registrar for information concerning eligibility for Articulation credit.

PLACEMENT POLICY

COTC has a mandatory Placement Policy required for all COTC students who have declared the intent of seeking an associate degree from COTC.  Non-degree students are exempt; however, once a non-degree student declares degree-seeking status or takes the placement exams, they must enroll in the appropriate Pre-College courses before enrolling in any courses for which these are prerequisites.  This policy is designed to help ensure that all students will experience success in their college courses.  The policy is supported by the COTC Faculty Council, the Academic Directors, and the Academic Coordinators.

[top]

Mandatory Placement Policy

  1. All students testing within the prescribed placement exam ranges are required to take the Pre-College Studies courses identified to meet the student's developmental needs.

  2. All required Pre-College Studies courses must be completed by the end of the first four quarters of enrollment or the first 30 hours of transcript course work.

  3. No student who is required to enroll in more than one Pre-College Studies course may enroll in more than 16 credit hours per quarter until the Pre-College requirements are successfully met.

  4. Prerequisites for courses will be enforced.  Students will not be permitted to enroll in courses for which the prerequisites have not been met.  Students who enroll in courses for which they have not met the prerequisites will be un-enrolled by the College Registrar.

Exceptions to the above stated number of credits and/or quarters require the written approval of the appropriate Academic Director and a copy of the waiver be placed in the student's Advisement file.

Students with accepted transfer credits are not required to take courses which are prerequisite to the course for which they receive transfer credit.  For example, a student receiving transfer credit for 1226 Trigonometry will not be required to take the COTC Math Placement Test or enroll in 1210 College Algebra.

Selective admission program applicants may be required to take additional tests as part of the admission process.  Applicants should request an Admission Information Packet from the Admissions or Academic Advising Offices for the program in which the student is interested.

Testing dates are available throughout the year.  Inquire at the Academic Advisory Office or at the Admissions Office, located in Hopewell Hall, for test dates.  Placement tests are administered free of charge to all students.

RE-ADMISSION

Students whose coursework has been interrupted should contact the Student Records Office at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the quarter for which re-admission is desired.  In situations in which coursework is interrupted or where requisite skills may have been lost, courses submitted for acceptance for program requirements will be subject to review and approval by the Academic Director.

This procedure is also applicable when transfer credit has been awarded.  Students who plan to transfer credit during their last quarter at COTC from another institution to meet graduation requirements must have the written approval of the Academic Director, Coordinator of Admissions, and Registrar prior to the quarter of graduation.  Course(s) which the student expects to  transfer must be clearly indicated on the Petition to Graduate form.

For additional information regarding re-admission to Selective Admission programs, refer to appropriate guidelines.

SENIOR CITIZENS

Any person 60 years or older may enroll tuition free in any COTC class on a non-credit, space-available basis. Although a senior applicant is not assessed an application fee, he/she is subject to Instructional Resource Fees where applicable.

Senior citizens enrolled on a non-credit basis are not held responsible for the regular class work and preparation of assignments. Courses do not apply toward the fulfillment of degree requirements.

A senior citizen wishing to receive college credit for coursework must enroll as a regular student and pay all appropriate fees and tuition.

[top]

SPECIAL STATUS STUDENTS

Under certain circumstances, a person may attend COTC as a "special status student" in order to take a particular course or courses consistent with the applicant's education and experience.  Special status students are not required to pay the $40 acceptance fee or submit high school or college transcripts and are not eligible to receive financial aid or earn a degree.

Any special status student who accumulates more than thirty (30) credit hours is strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic Advisor.  Students who accumulate more than thirty (30) credit hours need to be aware that not all credit hours may be applied towards a degree.

Special status students are issued grade reports at the end of each quarter of study.  Decisions made for each special status student admission are based on the particular circumstances of each case. Students who enroll in courses as a "special status student" are responsible for meeting course prerequisites as indicated in the course description section of the COTC Academics tab on the COTC Web Page.

[top]

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Students wishing to obtain transfer credit from another accredited college to COTC must submit an official college transcript to the Office of Student Records.  A bulletin with course descriptions or course syllabi from applicant's former college may be requested before transfer credit is evaluated.

Courses taken at an accredited institution in which a student has earned a grade of "C" (2.00) or better which are parallel to those at COTC will be considered for transfer credit.  In situations in which course work is determined to be too old or where requisite skills may have been lost, transfer credit will not be awarded. Transfer credit appears as "K" on COTC transcripts, and is not used in computing COTC cumulative averages.

For an Associate Degree or an approved Ohio Board of Regents certificate program, no more than 50 percent of the credits required for the degree or certificate will be accepted through transfer and non-traditional credit options combined.
