Spring 2008

Joan McKay   Sandy Siegrist   John Snider

“Online learning is transforming teaching, providing new instructional delivery models, and expanding access to education.” Research shows that effective online practices and instructional models can improve learning, student engagement and interaction with the content, instructor, and classmates. [Innovate Online, February/March 2008]

Admittedly, a bit skeptical about teaching the subject of mathematics online, Joan McKay, Sandy Siegrist, and John Snider have formed a collaborative team working to bring a human-face and unmistakable energy to their recently developed online courses. Joan, Sandy, and John did not develop their online courses overnight. They have been working hard this past fall and winter to plan, organize and write their courses following online best practices and incorporating pedagogically-sound strategies. They have gone the extra mile creating video tutorials for hard-to-understand concepts and incorporating them into their courses. Ask Joan, Sandy, and John about their experiences and lessons learned to date! Oh, and make sure to ask Sandy about this “Thing called Jing.”

Winter 2008

Marilee MartensMy name is Marilee Martens and I am a new psychology professor at OSU-Newark.  I came to the telCenter to get assistance in creating an interactive Jeopardy Game for my class to use as a review for upcoming tests.  I have played “PsychoJeopardy” with other classes that I have taught, but I have done so using a white board and I wanted to use media to make the game more fun for students.  Corri Edwards mentioned that the telCenter could definitely help me with my idea.

I met Travis Patrick his first day on the job and he enthusiastically agreed to create a Jeopardy-game format for my class using PowerPoint.  Travis had the project completed by the next day, which included making a template that any instructor can use. He even customized it specifically for my class.  The graphics are amazing and my students love playing the game as a test review!  Thanks very much to the telCenter for their technology and assistance!
