OSU - Newark Cost of Attendance Adjustment For Computer Purchases

Created: February 4, 2003 Last Updated: June 4, 2003

A student may use the General Appeal process to request that the cost of purchasing a laptop computer is added to the Cost of Attendance (COA).

ALLOWABLE EXPENSES:

A new computer purchase is defined as the basic factory components (operating system to include Microsoft Office) installed in the computer, ink jet printer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and support cables to hook up the listed devices. Shipping and handling charges may be included for deliver service and will be counted in the overall purchase price of the computer. In addition, extended warranties may be included. In general, allowable expenses will be considered for the minimum suggested specifications listed on the Dell Discounts page for the Newark Campus. Students are encouraged to purchase one of the suggested products from DELL™ to ensure they can connect with the campus.

NOTE:

The Newark Campus will not provide service for the computers. The purchase and payment plans will be directly through DELL™.

DOCUMENTATION:

An itemized statement of the expenses to be incurred or paid to a business that sells computers.

EXPENSES NOT COVERED:

PC upgrades & labor involved, devices, special software, large display or flat screen monitors, and special equipment UNLESS required for a class or a necessity for a disability as documented by an Academic Advisor, Disability Services, or physician.

Online fees for Internet services such as AOL, CompuServe, MSN, Road Runner, Scanners, computer desks, Ethernet cards, high end graphics cards, Zip drives, Jaz drives, hubs, re-writeable CD ROM units, extra storage disks, DVD drives, Category 5 or 6 cable, joy sticks, game wheels, laser printers, additional hard drives, added RAM, faster modems, upgraded speakers, upgraded sound cards, additional ink jet cartridges, UPS (universal power sources), battery back ups, surge protectors, or laptop carrying cases purchased as an add on to the computer price are not acceptable costs.

MAXIMUM REQUESTS:

The total price associated with the purchase of a laptop computer is not to exceed $1900.00.

An adjustment for a new computer or upgrade will be given based on the same schedule for computer replacement as the Newark Campus. Currently, that schedule is once every THREE years.

AID ADJUSTMENTS:

Student Loan funds will be used to assist with the purchase of a laptop computer but only to the extent that the student qualifies for additional funds. The loan funds may be front-loaded (funded for one term vs. over the enrollment period) so that funds are available the term the computer will be purchased.

The increased need as a result of a COA adjustment for computer expenses will not be used to award additional gift assistance and/or campus based aid.

**If Central Ohio Technical College ever adopts a mandatory computer purchase policy, the allowance for this purchase will be part of the COA for all students.
